FORM + FUNCTION

Students and staff at the University of Wyoming’s (UW’s) Laramie campus can now develop their music, theater, or dance skills in a newly renovated and expanded facility. Named for UW’s recently retired president, Tom Buchanan, the $35-million Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts includes approximately 4645 m2 (50,000 sf) of new construction and partial renovation of the existing 11,984-m2 (129,000-sf) fine arts center. In addition to cultural programs and fine arts outreach, the facility also houses the music, theater, and dance departments.

Building information modeling (BIM) is opening up new opportunities for the construction industry. Its adoption differs across various regions, but architects, consultants, engineers, and contractors are realizing the benefits of this new, collaborative way of designing, constructing, and maintaining a building. Heat-tracing systems are one building component taking advantage of BIM. As a solution that ensures comfort and contributes to life safety, it requires special attention.

When replacing a roof, it has generally been good practice to tear off the existing assembly and replace it with new material. However, this is beginning to change. Simply getting rid of an older roof may not be the best choice for the building owner or the environment.

Designers of commercial and institutional buildings in urban settings often work on constrained sites where the service areas exposed to weather or wash-down are located over occupied spaces below. While the requirements to protect these spaces from water intrusion are understood and documented, this is not the case for the wearing surface over the waterproofing system.

The custodian at Asheboro Church of God (North Carolina) had a well-worn routine during summer months. Every Saturday, he would turn on the church’s air-conditioning (AC) at 3 p.m. to ensure the space was cool and comfortable for morning service the next day. The 1115-m2 (12,000-sf) building needed an 18-hour cool-down time. In a time where sensitivity to environmental impacts is growing and utility bills are rising, this is unacceptable.
