Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) unveiled photos of its new $1.5 billion terminal modernization project, which is now 60 percent complete and expected to open in 2025.

The new project design emphasises efficiency, utilizing state-of-the-art technology with the passenger experience being the paramount influence. Components such as a rolling roof, tree columns, and open-air terraces integrate the natural surroundings of the landscape.

An additional feature of the project includes a customized bridge and tunnel, connecting the new terminal to gates, vendors, and airport amenities. The bridge leads guests to a revitalized center plaza complete with new stores and vendors.

Factors implemented for the optimal passenger experience include airstrip viewing sections, accelerated delivery of baggage using an updated baggage handling system, more garage parking using technology capable of guiding customers to available spots, and extended security checkpoints with an additional lane to accommodate families.

More than 90 percent of the materials services used in the modernization project are sourced from the surrounding Pittsburgh area.

The current Pittsburgh terminal was constructed 32 years ago and can no longer effectively accommodate the influx of passengers entering and leaving the airport.
