The Portage Bay Bridge in Seattle will get a $1.4B upgrade with two new parallel bridges that meet current seismic resiliency standards.
The eastbound bridge will extend the regional bicycle and pedestrian SR 520 Trail across Portage Bay, connecting to Seattle’s non-motorized trail network.
Construction of the landscaped lid over the highway will create nearly 1.2 ha (3 acres) of recreational open space and reconnect communities severed by the original construction of SR 520.
At present, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has completed all SR 520 improvements between I-405 in Bellevue and the Montlake neighborhood.
The project will work to ensure safer travel across the bay, improve mobility, and add more connections to Seattle’s non-motorized trail network.
Construction is anticipated to begin this month and is slated for completion in 2031. AECOM will serve as the lead designer for the project.
