Rolling out a jumbo-sized installation

When a larger-than-standard rolling steel door had to be installed at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall in New Jersey, the installation team was up to the challenge.

While traditional rolling steel doors measure in at 3 x 3 m (10 x 10 ft), this installation was 16.5 x 6.2 m (54 x 20.5 ft)—or, to put it in perspective, nearly seven times the width of a single-car garage; 3 m (10 ft) longer than a typical school bus.

Too large to fit on the factory floor, the door was assembled outside.

The piece was manufactured at a rolling steel facility in Dalton, OH, and delivered to the Garden State overnight. Due to its excessive size, the 8620 kg (19,000 lb) door required a permit for travel on an extended trailer.

Installers found the door’s curtain was too large to fit on the factory floor. The piece was assembled outside the facility, where it was then rolled on the barrel. The curtain-lifting was accomplished with two 5443 kg (12,000 lb) capacity forklifts, which included outrigging support. Four workers completed the installation in five full days.

A heavy-duty model was employed because the region faces heaving winds. The door is designed for a 1.48 kPa (31 psf) wind load, capable of withstanding winds over 160 km/h (100 mph). With the hall situated on the city’s boardwalk, the high winds hitting the building’s exterior also carry salt and sand from the nearby beach. To further protect the installation from these highly corrosive materials, the door was covered with a powder coating, providing a protective layer to prevent deterioration.
