The American Concrete Institute (ACI) expects to publish ACI 318-19, Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete, later this year. The new edition will be the first since the reorganized format was published in 2014 and will include new and updated code provisions along with color illustrations for clarity.
ACI anticipates 318-19 will cover transverse reinforcement and shear in wide beams, hanger reinforcement, and bi-directional interaction of one-way shear, and refer to ACI certifications. Existing provisions for elements such as two-way shear strength, ordinary walls, seismic loads, reinforcement detailing, analysis, and material requirements are expected to receive significant updates and clarifications. Analysis methods for two-way slabs and provisions on shearheads and composite concrete columns are set to be removed.
The institute has published a complete draft of the proposed standard for a 45-day public review period, which started December 21. It is anticipated the final code requirements will be made available in June and referenced in the 2021 International Building Code (IBC).
Printed and digital editions of ACI 318-19 are expected, as well as versions incorporating inch-pound units, SI units, and other languages. ACI 318-19 will be incorporated in the ACI Collection of Concrete Codes, Specifications, and Practices, and educational seminars will begin in fall.
