The American Concrete Institute (ACI) recently recognized the work of more than 100 professionals, groups, and companies at the Concrete Convention and Exposition.
The event took place in Kansas City, Missouri, and 22 other awards given out, including the Design Award, the Roger H. Corbetta Concrete Constructor Award, and the ACI Construction Award.
The Design Award honors a paper describing advanced concepts and techniques applied to a specific design project. It is awarded to the author, co-author, and engineer. This years’ winners were credited for investigating the design and construction deficiencies in two-way slab parking structures built prior to 1980 in Canada. They were Hassan Aoude, assistant professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Ottawa and two members of the Department of Civil Engineering and Applied Mechanics at Montréal’s McGill University, research associate William Cook, and professor Denis Mitchell.
The Roger H. Corbetta Concrete Constructor Award is given to an individual or organization who, or which, has made significant contributions to progress methods of concrete construction. Phillip Williams, executive director of project delivery at Delos Living, won the award for incorporating innovative sustainable materials and practices, along with his significant efforts in advancing knowledge in building information modeling.
The ACI Construction Award honors the construction worker whose resourcefulness produces a completed structure from drawings and specifications. These winners were chosen for their implementation of the repair design and the execution of the rehabilitation program of the Notre Dame Old Bowl football stadium (Indiana) due to freezing and thawing:
- Timothy Montgomery, structural engineer 5 at CDM Smith;
- Liyang Jiang, senior staff engineer at Simpson, Gumpertz, and Hegar (SGH);
- Matthew Sherman, principal at SGH; and
- Douglas Schlagel, director of construction and quality assurance at the University of Notre Dame.
Great to hear of top industry professionals receiving the recognition they deserve!
