Studio VARA[2] and Paulett Taggart Architects (PTA)[3] unveil the Sister Lillian Murphy Community, a new multi-family affordable housing project in San Francisco’s Mission Bay, featuring 152 units across a design that blends seamlessly into the neighborhood’s landscape.
The development consists of four separate blocks, which step downwards from seven to four stories, seamlessly integrating into the respective orientation of each block. In addition, a mews is combined into the design, assimilating the project into the surrounding neighborhood.
The 17,187 m2 (185,000 sf) development includes two lobbies, a community room, resident services office, teen room, property management office, and a main stairway. The interior spaces are complemented with oak furniture and warm color accents.
The common areas were designed with a sense of community in mind. Glazed sliding doors and a floating acoustic ceiling were utilized to enable gatherings. The community room operates as both a meeting and event space, for both residents of the development, and the Mission Bay neighborhood at large.
Using materials such as glass and wood, the development also incorporates design components such as verdant landscaping throughout the courtyard and an open-air arcade.
