AIA New York honors best in architectural design

Earlier this month, American Institute of Architects New York[2] (AIANY) announced the winners of the 2018 AIA New York Design Awards[3] during a symposium at the Center for Architects[4]. Thirty-two projects were recognized across four categories: architecture, interiors, projects, and urban design.
Designed by Freelon Adjaye Bond and Smithgroup[5], the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture[6] in Washington D.C. received the award for Best in Competition, with judges noting the project’s tremendous cultural and social significance.
All other recipients were granted either Honor or Merit awards. Projects were selected based on:
- design quality;
- response to context and community;
- program resolution;
- innovation;
- thoughtfulness; and
- technique.
Submitted projects were also considered for the newly introduced Citation award, which recognized designs excelling in relation to one specific feature.
Nominations were open to projects completed by AIANY members, as well as those by architects/designers practicing in New York or New York projects completed by architects/designers practicing elsewhere.
Honors recipients in the Architecture division are as follows:
- Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse[7] (Brooklyn, New York)—Architecture Research Office[8];
- Tirpitz Museum[9] (Blåvand, Denmark)—Bjarke Ingels Group[10] (BIG);
- Square House (Stone Ridge, New York)—LEVENBETTS[11];
- Magazzino Italian Art[12] (Cold Spring, New York)—MQ Architecture; and
- University of Toronto Daniels Building at One Spadina (Toronto, Canada)—NADAAA[13], Adamson Associates[14], and ERA Architects[15].
