The new $1.5-billion terminal at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) has reached 80 percent completion.

The new airport features a passenger-first design that reflects the values of a modern Pittsburgh region and yields a seamless and more welcoming curb-to-gate experience.

The first escalators have been installed, the state-of-the-art baggage system has been tested, and the first ceiling tiles have been placed. The building also saw the unveiling of the constellation lights that will illuminate the terminal.

On the exterior, the terminal began to take its striking form as workers installed the final curtainwall glass. With its expansive windows, this glass facade will transform the terminal into an observation deck, offering travelers views of the runway and surrounding landscape.

Local artist Clayton Merrell was summoned to highlight the terrazzo flooring, which features intricate patterns representing the leaves of Western Pennsylvania. The flooring complements the tree-like structural columns that span the terminal.

Another key feature of the new terminal is a bridge and tunnel connecting it to the current airside terminal.

In the first half of this year, crews will focus on finishing interior details, including installing airline ticket counters, the new security checkpoint, and completing the connector bridge linking the new and old terminals.

With roadway lines painted, wayfinding signs installed, and every system tested and retested, Pittsburgh International Airport will be ready to open its doors to the world sometime this year.
