Anchoring system used to repair New York building, saving millions of dollars

This ‘recognized iconic asset’ to the New York City skyline is located in midtown Manhattan on Park Avenue at 46^th Street, and was built as a Beaux-arts style building in 1929.

At the top of the building some of the 26 east and south facing terracotta columns, with the base starting at the 26^th floor and extending past the 34^th floor, had begun to show cracking and, in some areas, even shed large pieces of stone. The building owners and management received quoted prices exceeding $16 million after inquiring into replacement costs for these terracotta brackets..

Through probes and use of a borescope, assessors determined the structure behind the columns was sound. All that was needed was to attach an anchoring system to the backup and tie it to front face of stone. This strengthened the attachment to face and created additional points of contact for the stone face brackets that were still sound. Contractors achieved this by drilling oversized holes through the face of the stone and recessing the anchor 25 mm (1 in.) from the stone face to accommodate a finished patch.

The general contractor on this project was United Restoration Corp who worked closely with CINTEC North America, Thornton Tommasetti and Arteco Design Corp to complete this project with minimal issues and maximum savings of more than $15 millions.
