The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) says more than 37,000 candidates are seeking architectural licenses.

Its new report, “NCARB by the Numbers,” reported a record-high number of 37,178 aspiring architects submitted experience hours through the Intern Development Program (IDP) or were actively testing for the Architecture Registration Examination (ARE) in 2014. (The group is currently trying to change the word “intern” from being used to describe those working towards architecture licensure.)

“The architecture profession is healthy and growing,” said Michael Armstrong, the council’s CEO. “The report findings also help validate NCARB and its work with licensing boards to open doors of opportunity for qualified people in the architecture profession without sacrificing the rigor needed to ensure public health, safety, and welfare.”

The U.S. licensing boards reported there are 107,581 licensed architects, making 2014 the third consecutive year of increased growth in the profession. Other statistics from last year include:

The report , officially released next month, will also include demographics within the profession and year-over-year completion times for the IDP and ARE.
