A renovation project for the University of California (UC), Berkeley, will transform one of the buildings into an inclusive and accessible facility for the Disabled Students’ Program (DSP).

San Francisco-based Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects (LMSA) recently unveiled design plans for the Dwinelle Annex renovation project, renamed the Center for the University’s Disabled Students’ Program.

The proposed 817 m2 (8,800 sf) project will improve life safety and seismic performance, providing a welcoming headquarters for disabled student services on Berkeley’s campus. The new facility allows for enhanced services for more than 4,000 students.

Design components for the renovation project include a redeveloped entry plaza which functions as an open-air addition to the reception lobby. The east and west wings on the building’s second floor will be connected by a transparent concourse; and a courtyard facing a creek will also provide accessibility to the existing greenspace.

In addition to LMSA, the project team includes civil engineering by Sherwood Design Engineers, landscaping by In Situ, structural engineering by Forell | Elsesser, MP engineering by Buro Happold, and specifications by Stansen.

Multiple stakeholders were involved in the ideation phase of the renovation project including DSP leadership, staff, and students involved in the program. The project has unspecified components targeting LEED Gold with a proposed completion by the end of 2024.
