United Center, a sports arena in Chicago, will soon get a $7-billion mixed-use development project named The 1901 Project.

The development will include housing, retail, entertainment, and public open space on more than 22.2 ha (55 acres) of private land surrounding the iconic arena campus. The project will be the largest private investment on Chicago’s West Side.

The project will be the largest private investment on Chicago’s West Side.

It will include 4 ha (10 acres) of an urban elevated design strategy by RIOS and will feature a 6,000-seat capacity theater-style music hall, an elevated park, reimagined parking facilities and improved pedestrian experience, and a mix of hospitality and retail options.

Future phase development envisions housing spanning various unit sizes, including affordable, market-rate, and luxury housing. Transportation enhancements will better connect the neighborhood through multi-modal means, including bike, pedestrian, car, and rail enhancements.

The project is a long-term, multi-phased development inspired by Chicago’s motto “Urbs in Horto” (City in a Garden). The first phase of the project aims to begin in spring 2025
