Henning Larsen’s proposal for a new concert hall in Bergen, Norway has won an international competition to redesign the Griegkvartalet Theatre.

The Grieg Quarter competition featured 32 participants, with five shortlisted finalists; with Henning Larsen’s entry as the winning bid.

Bordering Bergen’s historic center, “Kontrapunkt” is a 17,500 m² (18,8368 sf) music and conference hall featuring a theater and orchestra pit, an exhibition venue, a cafe, and multipurpose rehearsal spaces.

An addition to the existing Grieg Hall, the music hall will encourage movement, exploration, and transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. It will accommodate 1,000 spectators and additional 145 seats will extend over the orchestra pit.

Under the northern expanse, new exhibition areas spanning 3,570m² (3,8427 sf) will offer a space for cultural exploration and engagement. Adjacent to the common areas will be a rehearsal room that is 16 x 16 m (52 x 52 ft) and will accommodate 140 seats.

The winning project is estimated to be completed by 2030.
