Courthouse to cocktail bar: Modern design meets history

[1]In a federal courthouse, architecture and interior firm, Dyer Brown has recently completed the construction of Marcelino’s, a boutique bar with a pan-Mediterranean menu and craft cocktails.
The 287-m2 (3,100-sf) space enlivens the Harborwalk and the grand court building.
Located within the 1999 Moakley U.S. Courthouse building on Boston’s Fan Pier, the venue welcomes visitors through the broadly curved, elevated bar. The design presents the main entrance as a portal, with infinity mirrors and a gold arch.
Inside, the curved bar at the center features laser-cut metal screens with patterns inspired by Moroccan architecture, vintage-style mirrors with arched metal forms, and a stone bar top with amber veining. In addition, the bar features a herringbone patterned wood floor, accented with patinaed brass throughout, and canopied by a tiered ceiling with a textural micro-cement finish. The bar base is composed of drywall columns painted black with embossed metallic.
The furniture throughout Marcelino’s is custom-designed. Dyer Brown installed in-floor uplighting at the entrance, linear LED cove lighting and recessed fixtures in the ceiling, custom sconces on the walls, and pendants hung over the bar. The design also uses large-format windows to penetrate near-zero daylight throughout service hours.
Back of the house, the infrastructure for the kitchen had to be upgraded to meet new building codes, including relocating exhaust and plumbing components through highly secure, hardened courthouse walls and floors.
