The Federal Highway Administration (FWHA) teamed up with the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) to issue Bridge Information Modeling Standardization, setting a path to implement the use of computer modeling for bridge construction in the United States.
FWHA’s goal was to add to the progress the buildings sector has made in building information modeling (BIM) standardization, advancing the standardization of digital information for bridges.
NIBS formed a team of experts to research existing modeling standards, evaluate bridge planning, design, and construction and operation processes, and analyze the state of practice to identify a path to bridge information modeling (BrIM) implementation.
The resulting report includes example component models of steel girder and reinforced concrete box beam bridges for use to exercise available approaches and determine capabilities and short-comings. The report is geared towards practitioners in transportation agencies, design firms, and software companies in the bridge domain.
