L.A.-based designer creates unrestrained look for Hawaii restaurant

Los Angeles-based interior design firm, Studio UNLTD, designed a restaurant in O’ahu, Hawaii, going for an uninhibited appearance, combining three distinct design styles.

The interior of Cino Chophouse and Crudo Bar evokes an eccentric artist’s apartment and blends maximalism, Art Deco, and contemporary design; creating a visually rich, layered experience.

The 278-m2 (3,000-sf) restaurant, including a 6.5 m2 (70-sf) outdoor space, serves as the flagship for an expanding restaurant chain. The design is split into three areas: the main cocktail bar and lounge at the entry, a raw bar, and the main dining room.

The smaller raw bar, adjacent to the cocktail bar, mirrors its design with a ribbed teal-blue tile bar face, an amazonite marble top, and decorative brass shelving. A baroque-inspired molding arches over the back bar, complemented by a hexagonal brass chandelier in a mirrored cove, casting a dramatic glow. Twin curvilinear banquettes face the bars in a palette of pinks, gold, chartreuse, and claret, resembling giant flower petals. Translucent purple drapery enhances the room’s softness, while oversized diagonal chevron-patterned black and white porcelain tiles visually link the three spaces.

In the main dining room, a deep mulberry backdrop sets the stage for flora and fauna prints, textured upholstery, and large chromatic portraits of exotic animals. Plush velvets, including an ultra-feminine floral print banquette and Kelly-green velvet dining chairs, surround polished brass and high-gloss table tops, adding to the avant-garde atmosphere.

The design, informed by a global perspective, aligns with the client’s vision of bold and transformative spaces, contributing to the mission of bringing meaningful change to Hawaii’s dining landscape.
