The proposed conceptual design of the 11,148-m2 (120,000-sf) Louisiana Music and Heritage Experience Museum in New Orleans aims to celebrate the city’s music legacy as a holistic experience. Located near the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, it aspires to be a premier destination, attracting visitors and locals alike.
The design firm, EskewDumezRipple, kept this forefront in the planned design: The Louisiana Music and Heritage Experience intends to weave a cohesive narrative, firmly establishing the state’s music communities as pivotal players in American music’s ongoing story.
Inspired by musical instruments, the museum’s design pays homage to music’s essence. The exterior is designed to resemble a hollowed guitar, while its interior and exterior elements incorporate instrument silhouettes, yielding a fluid aesthetic. Inside, exhibits, performance venues, research facilities, a museum store, and educational spaces will await visitors. In addition, the venue will boast a music club and restaurant, offering the flavors and sounds of New Orleans.
AI programs, such as Midjourney, fueled the design process, generating diverse architectural forms inspired by instruments (e.g. guitars and saxophones). These designs incorporated textual cues such as “Zumthor architecture,” “dramatic lighting,” and “cinematic” to stimulate creative outputs, complemented by extensive imagery references.
While the design phase evolves, the museum’s board pushes for its realization. Feasibility studies and support gathering are underway. Respected musicians, such as Kirk Joseph of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, passionately endorse the project, underscoring the need for a grand-scale tribute to New Orleans musical influence.
