The White Oak Medical Center in Silver Spring, Maryland, has utilized biophilic design elements to create a human-centric space and offer a calming, organic environment to support the healing process.
The bucolic site inspired CallisonRTKL’s design team—the building’s wooden façade reflects the area’s lush, forested setting. Light-filled public spaces, roof gardens, courtyards, a dining terrace, and walking trails promote a restorative healing environment.
The hospital is tracking toward Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold and features a 48 percent reduction in energy consumption from its previous facility due to its sustainable use of cogeneration.
There are also human-centric design elements in the maternity department that features a labor delivery room with access to the green roof terrace.
