Designs for Bilaj Al Jazayer Beach, Bahrain’s newest dynamic beach destination, have been revealed.
The 3.5-km (2.1-mile) walkable mixed-use district will provide new homes, hotels, retail, green spaces, and state-of-the-art amenities.
Drawing inspiration from Miami’s low-rise Art Deco buildings and Bahrain’s traditional vernacular, the permeable development features tree-lined streets, shaded courtyards, and a spectacular public park directly connecting with the waterfront.
The masterplan is organized around three primary axes: Beach Drive, which spans the full length of the beachfront; Main Boulevard, which is set back and runs parallel; and Bilaj Al Jazayer Avenue, which directly connects the two.
The green space is lined with native trees and designed with pedestrian walkways and bike lanes. Buildings on Beach Drive feature ground-level shops, restaurants, and cafes.
Smaller boutique hotels are interspersed at 500-m (1,640-ft) intervals across the masterplan, with residential communities between them. The centrepiece of the master plan is a public surf park, which uses wave-generating technology to replicate the natural ocean environment on land.
The project is undertaken by Foster + Partners, a global architecture studio.
