Michigan’s event center features IMPs to emulate speeding racing cars

A notable design feature of the M1 Event Center at M1 Concourse site in Pontiac, Mich., is the facade’s 1,000 custom insulated metal panels (IMPs), which mimic the movement and speed of racing cars.

The event center is the work of architect INFORM Studio. Leveraging digital fabrication techniques, the facade panels were tailored to specific shapes and elevations, allowing customization.

The result is a design that captures the dynamic movement and speed associated with the cars at the adjacent M1 Champion Motor Speedway. The use of IMPs not only contributes to the aesthetic appeal, but it also ensures energy efficiency and thermal performance, aligning with modern construction standards and sustainability considerations.

Designed to harmonize with the style and speed of the nearby M1 Champion Motor Speedway, the M1 Event Center serves as a versatile space for various events, including vehicle launches, charitable galas, fashion showcases, lifestyle events, and significant automotive and technology expositions. With a 585-m² (6,300-sf) ballroom and outdoor areas, including an upper-level deck providing panoramic views of the speedway, the center caters to a range of activities.

The M1 Concourse stands as one of the world’s largest communities of private car condominiums, spanning 35.2 ha (87 acres) to offer car and racing enthusiasts a comprehensive venue for an immersive experience. Featuring a 1.6-km (1.5-mile) high-performance track, the M1 campus includes the M1 Event Center, restoration shops, aftermarket retail, and restaurants.
