The Aetos Center for the Performing Arts in Nixa, Miss., is the winner of the 2024 Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute’s (PCI) Design Awards for Best Schools K-12 Building.
The center is a 5,567 m2 (59,929 sf) energy-efficient performing arts venue, education space, and community hub. The building, made of total precast concrete, features an 1150-seat theatre and support and back-of-house production spaces.
It also features a light-filled, steel, glass lobby welcoming visitors into the structure. Another design highlight is the curtain, which is abstracted into a textured precast concrete enclosure that unifies the performance and viewing spaces.
The use of precast concrete helped alleviate site-related construction challenges. Panels were delivered ready to install and assembled in minimal time and with little disruption to the school’s operations.
Construction of the new performing arts center was completed in under two years, using precast concrete components—which included 129 pieces in precast in six different forms.
Since its construction, the performing arts center has become a destination for regional and national travelling shows.
