The Holy Aid and Comfort Spiritual Church, a distinguished landmark within the Seventh Ward of New Orleans, La., will undergo a major preservation and expansion project.

Recognized as one of the 11 most-endangered buildings by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2023, the church has tried to revitalize its cherished edifice. Despite substantial damage from the ravages of natural disasters over the years, the resilient Spanish Mission Revival architecture persists, retaining a multitude of historical elements, notably showcased on its street-facing facade, windows, wooden sliding, and interior embellishments.

In response to the church’s quest for restoration, the Cushing Terrell team, who is undertaking schematic design, engaged with the Preservation Resource Center in New Orleans, under the stewardship of Reverend Harold Lewis. The firm extended schematic design services pro-bono, aligning with the imperative of preserving the church’s historical essence and its integral role in the records of New Orleans history.

The restoration project encompasses not only the preservation of existing architectural components but also entails prospective expansion endeavors to cater to the evolving needs of the congregation and the broader community.

As a testament to its cultural and architectural significance, the structure holds a revered position on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), nestled within the esteemed New Marigny National Register Historic District, and enjoys individual landmark status.
