The National Lighting Bureau (NLB) is seeking entries for its 36th High-Benefit Lighting Awards Program.
The competition is open to anyone associated with a new or upgraded illumination system providing benefits of ‘high-benefit lighting’—a term created by the bureau to denote function-focused electric-illumination systems designed to fulfill specific purposes for which they will be used.
“For architects, engineers, and specifiers, it is important to realize the impact effective lighting can have,” said John Bachner, executive director of NLB. “For example, in work spaces it can improve performance of visual tasks (all tasks except those that can be performed with one’s eyes closed), thereby increasing productivity. If the productivity of a $40,000 per year employee increases just one percent, the employer saves $400. If the amount of lighting energy the same worker needs is reduced by 80 percent, the employer may save $40. While energy savings are valuable, lighting is not designed to consume more or less energy—its purpose is to achieve effects, and many of these have price tags far more substantial than energy costs.”
Another example is using high-benefit lighting outdoors to help prevent accidents of all types, which also prevents the losses associated with filing insurance claims, absenteeism, administration paperwork, accident cleanup, and negative publicity and litigation.
“The award we give is absolutely unique,” added Bachner. “An award winner will either become the author of a story about the lighting project involved, or become part of the story written by another person associated with a project, like a client’s or owner’s representative. The article would appear in a major trade publication.”
Entries will be accepted until October 31. Click here for more information.
