NYC suspends public design work due to budget constraints

New York City’s Department of Design and Construction[2] (DDC), in charge of building many of the civic facilities in the city, has placed a moratorium on public design projects due to budget constraints caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, reports the Architects Newspaper[3].

As per Architects Newspaper, in a letter dated March 26, DCC directed firms currently engaged in public design work to “immediately halt all services being provided, or to be provided, under your contract (including any task orders, change orders, amendments) with DDC, including all services provided by subcontractors and/or subconsultants.”

The American Institute of Architects[4] (AIA) New York, as well as other local engineering and construction chapters, and labor groups, have written to NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio “asking that the city reconsider its decision to immediately halt design work for public projects. Design work is essential to construction projects, and, as you know, necessary for public projects to be shovel-ready. Additionally, unlike other aspects of construction, design work can be safely and properly completed in the safety of our homes.”
