Leadership from the USA Niagara Development Corporation (USAN), City of Niagara Falls officials, Practice for Architecture and Urbanism (PAU), Hargreaves Jones, and design firms have presented the designs for the $12 million Niagara Heritage Gateways Project in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
The project, revealed by Governor Kathy Hochul in 2022, is the inaugural phase of the Downtown Niagara Falls Heritage Walk initiative, designed to enhance connections between downtown and Niagara Falls State Park. The public had the opportunity to provide input on the project, expected to commence construction in 2024.
Funded through Buffalo Billion II and the Regional Revitalization Partnership, the Niagara Falls Heritage Gateways project is part of USA Niagara’s Downtown Development Strategy, which is focused on re-imagining acquired properties to contribute to a vibrant and sustainable downtown for residents and visitors alike.
Comprising the Hydraulic Power Plaza and Niagara Gorge Gateway Park, the first phase aims to establish a versatile public space linking the state park’s natural marvels with the downtown area.
The plans also introduced a Tree Walk along the Riverway near the Niagara River Upper Rapids. This walk, accessible from Buffalo Ave. and the Niagara Falls State Park, will feature a platform extending toward the river, providing panoramic views of the Upper Rapids and Goat Island, guiding visitors from Riverway to downtown.
Anthony Vilardo, president of USA Niagara, stated these placemaking projects represent the next stage in revitalizing Downtown Niagara Falls, aligning with Hochul’s vision to narrate the city’s story and create functional, aesthetically pleasing public spaces that set the groundwork for future economic development.
