A complete renovation of the original Charles Klauder Building at the University of Colorado (CU) Boulder’s campus is currently underway in the form of the Hellem Arts and Sciences building.

The primary goal of this 9,476 m2 (102,000 sf) project, undertaken by a collaboration between design companies Hacker and Handprint, is to create a student-focused facility that is welcoming, inclusive, and supports the flexibility of multi-department uses.

For a century, the Hellems Arts and Sciences building has epitomized student experience on the CU Boulder campus. Many of the exterior elements of the building will be preserved, including the exposed concrete structure, restored terrazzo, and stone and wood floors.

The design team will restructure the east wing of the building to expand and adapt classrooms, while the west wing will contain the faculty offices. Currently, the demolition of the east wing is in process.

The project is expected to be completed by 2025.
