South Bay International Wastewater Treatment Plant (SBIWTP), a federal plant at the United States–Mexico border in San Diego, Calif., will get a $600M expansion.
The project will rehabilitate the plant’s existing infrastructure, double its treatment capacity, and address aging infrastructure.
The $42.4-million first phase of the project will consist of Stantec’s design for expansion and rehabilitation of the plant. The design is expected to be completed within 20 months. Following design, PCL’s construction phase is estimated to take about five years.
Expansion of SBIWTP, alongside wastewater infrastructure improvements in Mexico, will help eliminate up to 90 percent of untreated wastewater reaching the coast. This will provide cleaner, safer water for surrounding communities.
The plant will remain in operation throughout design and construction.
