Construction is underway on a $2.9B project to renovate and expand Terminal 3 at the San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

The project will upgrade the 60,386 m2 (650,000 sf) western half of the terminal. It will also create 18,580 m2 (200,000 sf) of additional space, allowing for expanded food, beverage, and retail concessions. It will also include a seismic retrofit.

The Terminal 3 West Modernization project will create a welcoming new exterior facade, more space for check-in, including self-bag drop, and new security checkpoints. Arriving international passengers will have direct access to the Customs Hall, which can be accessed via a new Federal Inspection Service (FIS) sterile connector.

The terminal will include a new six-story building that will house airline lounges and operational office space.

Sustainability features will include daylight harvesting, displacement ventilation, on-site photovoltaic (PV) cells, waste heat recovery, low-carbon steel and concrete, energy-smart baggage handling, dynamic glazing, recycled water, hydration stations, health-friendly materials, and green building education.

Undertaken by Turner Construction Company and Gensler, the expanded section will open in fall 2027.

SFO is targeting LEED Platinum certification for this project.
