Skanska has landed a $22.6 million contract from the Town of Belmont to spearhead the construction of the Belmont Skating Rink and Athletic Facility in Massachusetts.
The project involves the demolition of the existing Viglirolo Skating Rink for a new 3,744-m2 (40,300-sf) facility.
With the Viglirolo Skating Rink having served the community for more than half a century, the new facility promises to be a significant enhancement. Designed by Galante Architecture Studio, the project features a 3,716-m2 (40,000-sf) steel-framed, pre-engineered metal building housing a 61- x 26-m (200- x 85-ft) ice sheet. The facility includes amenities such as team locker rooms, dressing rooms, bleacher seating, and a concession stand.
The project will integrate sustainable practices with the installation of photovoltaic (PV) solar panels, which will cover the roof, and by using a heat pump refrigeration system to regulate the ice surface temperature and control the facility’s interior during non-ice seasons.
This contract follows Skanska’s successful collaboration with the Town of Belmont on the construction and renovation of Belmont Middle and Belmont High School. The Belmont Skating Rink, situated on the newly constructed campus, broke ground in October 2023 and is slated for completion in early 2025.
