Skanska has started renovations at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., in anticipation of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The project targets the stadium’s lower bowl, aiming to expand the playing field to meet FIFA specifications and hosting eight tournament matches, including the final.

As part of the project, four corners of existing precast seating will be demolished and a new modular steel composite seating system will be introduced, alongside mechanical, electrical, audiovisual, and plumbing adjustments. Further, 1,740 permanent seats will be removed to accommodate the expanded field and replaced on the modular system to maintain current NFL seating layouts.

To accommodate ongoing stadium activities and team schedules, construction will take place in two phases. Phase I, which began in January, is set for completion by May 2024; and Phase II is scheduled for January 2025, with a target completion date of May 2025.

Skanska, having constructed the 20,439-m2 (2.2-million-sf) MetLife Stadium in 2010, is experienced in stadium projects. The venue, featuring advanced technology and seating for 82,500 spectators, including 222 luxury suites, is home to two NFL teams: New York Giants, and New York Jets. Beyond football, it hosts concerts and various entertainment and sports events, including Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014.
