SmithGroupJJR design wins USGBC award in Virginia

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Virginia[2] chapter announced the recipients of its 2018 USGBC Virginia Leadership Awards, recognizing nominated building owners, designers, and construction professionals within the community whose projects achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

Among this year’s winners is the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s LEED-Platinum certified Brock Environmental Center, which received the organization’s Exceptional Leadership. Designed by SmithGroupJJR[3], the facility employs a variety of sustainability strategies, including permeable paving and on-site waste treatment. All of the water consumed onsite is treated rainwater, requiring no use of municipal water sources.

Other winners include:

• Fontaine Fire Station (LEED Platinum)—Innovative Design, New Construction award;
• CHKD Health Center and Urgent Care at Landstown (LEED Silver)—Building Performance award;
• Bow Creek Recreation Center—Virginia Environments award;
• Huguenot High School (LEED Gold)—Community Champion award; and
• Virginia Tech—Green Leader award (organization).
• Nell Boyle (City of Roanoke), Tim Cole (Virginia Beach City Public Schools), and Carrie Webster (County of Henrico)—Green Leader award (volunteers).

USGBC Virginia also honored the participants of the 2017-2018 Connect the Dots Green Schools Challenge[4], which asks K–12 schools across Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland to implement creative, effective, no- or low-cost sustainable practices for their schools.
