A 179-year-old mill in Massachusetts has been converted into a 13,862 m2 (149,220 sf) mixed-income, 86-unit rental community called Stone Mill Lofts.
Designed by The Architectural Team (TAT), the $39.2 million building meets the current energy codes and the National Park Service’s historic preservation guidelines.
Each of the 86 apartment units features large window openings and integrates existing historical elements, such as exposed original wood beam ceilings.
Some other features of the fossil-fuel-free design building include substantial insulation, high-performance historic replica windows, high-efficiency heat pumps, and other electric systems reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by an estimated 33 percent compared to a typical apartment building.
