Studio Gang-designed NY museum breaks ground

The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) has broken ground on the Studio Gang[2]-designed Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation[3] in New York.
The 21,368-m2 (230,000-sf) facility will add exhibition galleries, state-of-the-art classrooms, an immersive theater, and a redesigned library, and link 10 museum buildings to improve visitor flow throughout the campus.
“Our design for the Gilder Center will invite visitors to explore the wonders of the museum with its openness and smooth, flowing geometry,” said Jeanne Gang, founding principal of Studio Gang. “Through a network of new connections, people will be able to follow their own curiosity to discover treasures of natural history. This network is accessed through the Central Exhibition Hall, which utilizes the fluidity of concrete to create a porous structure and iconic interior.”
The museum is seeking a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification.
