The El Paso VA Health Care Center, a new 45,708 m2 (492,000 sf) ambulatory care facility, recently broke ground in Bliss, Tex.
The overall design reflects the high desert environment, using rock, stone, and textured precast concrete integrated into the building’s facade to complement the nearby mountains’ geological strata and rugged textures.
Public spaces inside the health center are oriented along the building’s northern facade and have an expansive glass curtain wall.
To the northeast of the center, a 1,672 m2 (18,000 sf) healing garden offers a space for respite. Toward the northwest, 603 m2 (6,500 sf) of outdoor cafe seating connects to the interior canteen. A 464 m2 (5,000 sf) shaded staff plaza on the facility’s south side connects the main staff entry to staff parking. Some additional features include a two-story lobby housing retail spaces and the patient pharmacy.
The health center’s interior design is inspired by the nearby Rio Grande River. Its warm material palette is inspired by the colors and textures of the desert and river trails.
The project will also include a new central utility plant and significant improvements to utilities, stormwater management, and parking facilities.
The new health center is oriented to optimize environmental conservation and protection, contributing to a goal of 30 percent energy reduction.
SmithGroup is leading in interior architecture and interior design while joint venture (JV) partner HKS is leading in exterior architecture and site planning.
The healthcare facility is anticipated to be completed in 2028 and is designed to exceed LEED Silver certification.
