In recent years, landscape architects and their clients, including both public and private owners and developers, have been considering the impact of digital technology on outdoor areas, with dialogue over how personal devices and larger digital installations catalyze public spaces and civic engagement.
Among the inescapable findings is that, in a variety of settings, property owners and public agencies view digital technology as a valuable layer of placemaking that boosts the attraction and use of parks and public spaces between and around buildings. These novel ideas are changing how project teams conceive, plan, furnish, and landscape the public realm and the partnerships required to create fresh opportunities for dynamic and engaging places. Recent experience shows how digital placemaking contributes to successful outdoor destinations and experiences, and how landscape architecture and civil engineering techniques support successful architectural works.
An article in our newest digital supplement focuses on this never-ending design process of digital placemaking that seeks to engage diverse audiences in the life of a city or town by acknowledging the ever-changing social, political, and technical landscape. It appears along with a trio of articles on landscape architecture in Advances in Landscape Architecture, a free digital supplement. Click here[2] to read it.
