The Window and Door Manufacturers Association’s (WDMA’s) “2015 Window and Entry Door U.S. Market Study” states commercial window shipments increased from last year.
The report provides the data and insights needed to understand the industry’s performance, key trends, and future direction. It is based on extensive industry input for product shipments in 2014 and was prepared, researched, and analyzed by Hanley Wood (HW) and the Virginia Tech Center for Housing Research (VCHR). It includes residential entry door, and residential and commercial window market trends and product relationships.
Over 50 million units of residential windows were shipped across the country—a 10 percent growth from 2013. The annual growth for 2014 was led by the Midwest, which saw an increase of 18 percent to 11.83 million shipments.
Shipments of side-hinged entry doors increased by 13 percent last year—double the growth rate of six percent in the previous year. The South saw the largest volume of shipments at 4.26 million units, but this represented a weak growth of one percent.
Nationally, commercial windows posed a three percent increase in 2014 to 9.1 million m² (97.5 million sf). The South showed the largest increase of 33 percent to 3.1 million m² (33.35 million sf). WDMA forecasts data for 2015 through 2017 based on projections of construction activity as of May 2014.
“HW and VCHR worked closely with WDMA and its members to establish a new process for collecting member-based primary data on select segments of the window, entry door and architectural door component of the industry,” said Jeff Lowinski, vice-president of technical services at WDMA. “We then combined those data with other expertise of the HW/VCHR team on U.S. activity, both in the residential and non-residential construction sectors. As a result, this report presents topline national and regional data and detailed product data for the housing stock, commercial construction, and technology to enable insights into the industry, its clients, and ultimately its end consumers.”
