Winthrop Center in Boston’s Financial District is a Passive House-certified office space, which is the largest office to achieve that certification in the world.

Constructed by Handel Architects, the 167,00 million m2 (1.8 million sf) building has more than 62 stories of offices and apartments. The project’s 21 floors of office spaces have been Passive House certified—with 317 residential units making up the top floors, and retail, restaurants and gathering spaces being incorporated throughout the public ground-level passageway called The Connector.

The building consists of a large, public passageway at its base with a pleated curtain wall facade topped with a rippled crown. A curved and rectangular volume is affixed to either side of the tower. This building features an angular podium base resolving into a taut, symmetrical tower and has a layered facade geometry. The glass window itself is also triple-glazed, which reduces heat loss in colder months and reduces heat gain in the summer.

Handel also completed the interior for the projects, integrating brass, marble, metal, and wood throughout.

The offices are also WELL Gold Certified, and the team is pursuing LEED certification.
